Special Needs
LBR ensures that every Boxer accepted into our rescue gets the medical care they require, whether it be surgery for a broken limb, torn ACL or a simple exam and vaccinations.
Occasionally, LBR accepts in a dog that we think is going to be adoptable, but after visiting our Veterinarian, we find out that the dog has a medical condition that we feel makes them un-adoptable. Some examples include Cardiomyopathies and/or Kidney Disease. These diagnoses are fatal to the animal and we could not, in good conscience, adopt out a dog that could pass on any day.
LBR keeps these dogs in their foster home and continues to care for their every need. Ultrasounds, surgery, medication, special diets – whatever it takes to make them comfortable for as long as it takes. We let them live out the rest of their lives in an environment where they can, for once, be carefree! They are our “Forever Fosters”.
We are able to do this because of the generous donations from people like you. A little money can go a long way and can mean the world to a Boxer in need.
Vincent came into a local shelter completely emaciated and dehydrated. He had no muscles, at all, and could barely walk; nothing but skin and bones, literally. He was just a tiny little guy, weighing in at a whopping 10.3 lbs with a height of about 12”! Due to his size, we thought he was a puppy – there was no way that this was an adult Boxer. The fact that he was starved made his features look “funny” so we even wondered if he was a pure Boxer. It didn’t matter. This little guy needed help and we were going to give it to him! LBR immediately took him to see our Vet where we received a startling surprise…..according to our Doctor, Vince was NOT a puppy but estimated to be about 2 years old and also a pure bred Boxer! The conclusion was that the years of starvation and neglect had stunted his growth. Well, we were amazed – at this news and also at the fact that he was still alive! What a trooper! Vincent was placed into a loving foster home where the medical care continued. He was taken to a Urologist, underwent an Ultrasound and was diagnosed with Kidney Failure, again, due to the severe starvation and neglect. Needless to say, the group was devastated as this diagnosis is a death sentence…the question was “how long does he have?”. No one could possibly answer that. So, Vincent became a “Forever Foster”…..
Vince on arrival:
Thanks to Lighthouse Boxer Rescue and the generous donations we receive, Vincent was able to live a wonderful, carefree and extremely spoiled life for 2 years and 3 months before his kidneys finally gave out. We still miss him….
Lucy found herself in a shelter after her owner was arrested. She became “a court case” which meant that the shelter, by law, had to hold her until the case was settled. Poor Lucy was in that shelter for 8 long months. Once the case was over, LBR pulled her in. When she was seen by our Doctor, she was diagnosed with a Cardiomyopathy (irregular heartbeat). So Lucy became a “Forever Foster”…..
Lucy was seen by a Cardiologist and placed on medication to help regulate her heartbeat. She lived a wonderful, carefree life in her foster home until her heart stopped beating. We still miss her….
We are so grateful to be able to help dogs like Vincent and Lucy who so deserve to be in a safe, loving home where everything they require, and more, is provided.
