PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING BEFORE SURRENDERING YOUR DOG:

Are you sure you’re ready to give up your boxer? What happened that was so bad that it drove you to even consider surrendering your Boxer? Did your dog urinate in the house? Does your dog not listen? Have you taken the time to train your dog so that these above situations do not continue to occur? Have you contacted a professional positive reinforcement trainer? Have you talked with your Veterinarian?

When you made the decision to take this dog into your home, to be a part of your family, you made a commitment to him/her; why are you giving up on this….giving up on him/her?

  • Are you looking to surrender your 8 or 10 year old dog that you’ve had since a pup? Put yourself in his/her shoes for a second and imagine how you would feel….you are all s/he has known, loved and been loyal to. Now, s/he’s being shipped off to a new, unfamiliar home? How would you like to be removed from your home never to see your family again? We’ll bet you would NOT appreciate that!
  • Is the reason you’re looking to surrender because your dog is “aggressive”? Did you know that many aggression issues can be the result of illness or injury? Have you taken him/her to the vet for a medical examination?
  • Or maybe the reason you are looking to surrender is because you are moving…..Really? Are you taking your kids with you? There are many houses and apartments that allow pets. This is NO excuse, sorry!

If these statements have made you reconsider your decision to surrender (and we hope it did!) and now you would like more information or support, visit our Pet Tips section (re-homing) and see if there is something we can do to help you keep your dog.

If these statements did not make you look for ways to keep your dog, feel free to contact us. Please remember, however, that you are not the only person who is contacting Lighthouse Boxer Rescue to surrender a dog. If we are not able to take your dog we will try to help you come up with another solution that is best for your Boxer.

A Poem for Thought.......

I adopted your dog today
The one you left at the pound
The one you had for seven years
and no longer wanted around

I adopted your dog today
Do you know he’s lost weight?
Do you know he’s scared and depressed
and has lost all faith?

I adopted your dog today
He had fleas and a cold
But don’t worry none
You’ve unburdened your load

I adopted your dog today
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies?
Or another reason he couldn’t stay?
I adopted your dog today
He doesn’t play or eat much
He’s very depressed
But he will learn again to trust

I adopted your dog today
And here he will stay
He’s found his forever home
And a warm bed on which to lay

I adopted your dog today
And I will give him all that he could need -
Patience, love, security and understanding.
Hopefully he will forget your selfish deed.
